This foundational course in English Language Arts develops students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students engage with a variety of literary genres, including fables, poetry, drama, and short stories. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary building, grammar usage, spelling, comprehension, and paragraph writing. Oral presentations and reading fluency are also important components of the course, and students gain confidence and express themselves effectively.
In Grade 8, students build on their prior knowledge by analyzing literary texts and refining their written expression. The curriculum includes the study of myths, folktales, novels, poetry, and non-fiction. Students enhance their grammar and punctuation skills, explore writing for various purposes, and are introduced to literary devices such as similes, metaphors, and personification. Vocabulary development and oral communication remain core components.
This course prepares students for senior-level English by refining reading strategies and writing techniques. Students examine more complex literature, including novels, plays, and persuasive texts. They focus on argument development, essay writing, literary analysis, and grammar proficiency. Oral presentations, vocabulary enrichment, and comprehension tasks support critical thinking and academic communication skills.
Grade 10 English marks the start of preparation for the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE). Students read and analyze short stories, novels, and poems while practicing narrative, descriptive, and expository writing. Emphasis is placed on editing, vocabulary enhancement, grammar accuracy, and effective communication. Students develop analytical skills by identifying themes, tone, and literary elements in texts.
This course builds upon BGCSE exam preparation, with a deeper focus on writing skills, literary analysis, and oral communication. Students practice formal writing formats, including letters, reports, argumentative essays, and summaries, to develop their writing skills. They study Caribbean and world literature, gaining a deeper appreciation of culture and writing. Structured grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary lessons support their ability to express ideas clearly and critically.
Grade 12 finalizes students’ preparation for the BGCSE English Language and Literature exams. They engage in comparative literary analysis, extended essay writing, and oral communication tasks. Emphasis is placed on mastering tone, style, argumentation, and interpretation. Students refine their ability to critique literature, write effectively across genres, and perform under exam conditions, preparing them for academic and professional success.
