Elementary School Grades

Kindergarten is the first step for a child toward laying his educational foundation. Kindergarten is an online Elementary school educational approach that conventionally includes activities such as playing, singing, drawing, and practical activities that help nurture social skills.

Grade 1 Language Arts curriculum emphasizes foundational communication skills across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students begin by developing phonemic awareness and phonics to build early reading fluency. Emphasis is placed on recognizing and using basic sight words, constructing simple sentences, and practicing oral expression. Through engaging literature and structured instruction, students are introduced to comprehension strategies.

Grade 1 Science introduces mathematical principles that enable students to develop foundational mathematical skills by learning number concepts, counting, simple addition and subtraction, recognizing shapes, basic measurements, and introductory problem-solving through hands-on activities.  They explore the five senses, body parts, weather, the needs of living things, and the basic properties of matter through observation and inquiry.

Grade 1 Mathematics focuses on building foundational number sense and mathematical thinking. Students learn to recognize, compare, and manipulate numbers up to 100. Key concepts include basic addition and subtraction, measurement, shapes, patterns, time, and money. Through hands-on activities, students develop problem-solving skills and mathematical language in a playful and engaging environment.

Grade 1 introduces students to the foundations of Bahamian identity and community life. Students explore the life of the Lucayans—the first settlers of The Bahamas—while learning about their own neighborhoods, maps, and local government figures. Lessons emphasize rules, good citizenship, and the importance of community helpers. Geographic concepts like land, water, and directional words are introduced alongside topics in culture, history, and economics, such as farming and transportation.

Grade 2, builds upon their foundational skills, with a greater focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and structured writing. They explore various genres of literature and informational texts to develop and strengthen their inference-making and summarization skills. Oral communication and writing instruction expand to include descriptive and narrative forms, while spelling and phonics instruction reinforce decoding and encoding strategies.

Grade 2 Science incorporates mathematical principles that build upon number sense and place value, while strengthening addition and subtraction strategies. Students are introduced to basic multiplication, money, time, and data interpretation.  In Science, students explore animal habitats, environmental care, physical traits of living things, sources of energy, and continue learning how to use basic scientific tools in simple investigations.

Grade 2 students expand their understanding of number operations, place value, and measurement. They engage in solving real-world problems involving addition and subtraction, explore skip counting, and begin working with simple fractions. Geometry concepts such as symmetry, shapes, and spatial awareness are introduced, and students start using tools like rulers to measure length.

Grade 2 students deepen their understanding of Bahamian history by examining life before and after the arrival of Christopher Columbus. They explore the differences among Bahamian islands, local street names, and the roles of important leaders. Key themes include appreciation of individual differences, conflict resolution, and the significance of being a Bahamian citizen. Students also examine how tourism and inter-island commerce contribute to the economy.

The Grade 3 curriculum helps students develop into independent readers and writers. Students engage with a broader range of texts, applying comprehension strategies to extract meaning, evaluate ideas, and make connections. Oral and written communication are emphasized, along with vocabulary. Writing tasks become more complex, and cursive handwriting is also introduced; students are encouraged to use technology in their communication efforts.

Grade 3 Science includes mathematical principles that include multiplication and division facts, basic fractions, area, perimeter, and multi-step word problems with real-world contexts. Science lessons focus on life cycles, ecosystems, motion and forces, and environmental health, with an emphasis on recording data and making observations using standard scientific methods.

Grade 3 reinforces and extends number fluency with multiplication and division, fractions, and place value into the thousands. Students are introduced to perimeter, area, and more advanced measurement units. Data collection, interpretation using graphs, and problem-solving strategies are emphasized to strengthen critical thinking and reasoning abilities.

Grade 3 focuses on early Bahamian history, including the Eleutheran Adventurers and their influence on Bahamian society. Students expand geographic skills through map reading and learning about the location of major islands. Civic education topics include rights and responsibilities, bullying prevention, and respect for laws. Economic concepts such as trade and resource use are introduced, helping students connect historical developments with present-day life.

Grade 4, the Language Arts curriculum deepens students’ literacy and communication skills by integrating reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students explore a range of fiction and nonfiction texts to enhance their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Writing instruction focuses on organization, clarity, and structure in narrative, descriptive, and expository forms. Grammar and usage are emphasized alongside spelling, handwriting, and word building to strengthen mechanics.

Grade 4, Science incorporates mathematical principles that deepen students’ understanding of decimals, equivalent fractions, long division, geometry, and advanced word problems. In Science, students investigate body systems, changes in matter, Earth’s structure, space, and conservation efforts with a special focus on the Bahamas’ mangrove ecosystems.

Grade 4 introduces more complex concepts, including multi-digit multiplication, long division, decimals, and equivalent fractions. Students solve word problems involving money, time, and measurement, and use bar graphs and pictographs to represent data. The curriculum promotes mathematical communication and logical reasoning through real-life applications.

Grade 4 covers the historical period from the Lucayans to the Loyalists, including the introduction of plantations and institutions like the Anglican Church and Parliament. Students delve into advanced geographic concepts like latitude, longitude, and the Tropic of Cancer. Government studies include correctional institutions and youth ministries, while economics focuses on industries and the significance of regional cooperation. Cultural studies highlight Bahamian traditions and Junkanoo.

Grade 5 emphasizes refining reading comprehension, expanding vocabulary, and mastering grammar and writing conventions. Students analyze more complex texts from diverse genres and cultures. Writing tasks involve persuasive essays, reports, and narrative compositions, encouraging students to organize ideas clearly and use appropriate language. Students also continue developing legible handwriting and explore media literacy through digital tools.

Grade 5 Science includes mathematical principles that center on percentages, volume, ratios, algebraic thinking, and mastering operations with decimals and fractions. In Science, students study classification systems, the human skeletal system, weather instruments, and the sustainable use of marine resources, such as conch and sponges.

Grade 5, students master operations with decimals and fractions, understand volume, and interpret more advanced graphs. Algebraic thinking is introduced through patterns, relationships, and basic equations. Geometry focuses on angle measurement, properties of polygons, and coordinate planes. Emphasis is placed on applying mathematical knowledge in practical contexts.

Grade 5 emphasizes the progression from slavery to emancipation in Bahamian history. Students explore the impacts of piracy, bootlegging, and regional trade. The curriculum expands civic knowledge by introducing lawmaking processes and national security leaders. Geographic awareness is enhanced through the use of advanced map skills and tools. Students also study regional organizations, Bahamian financial institutions, and the concept of economic sustainability.

Grade 6 students consolidate their literacy skills to prepare for junior high. Reading instruction encompasses the analysis of literary genres and nonfiction texts, with a focus on comprehension, interpretation, and critical thinking. Writing becomes more structured, with students producing multi-paragraph essays and reports that utilize advanced grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. Cursive handwriting is refined, and students are taught to adjust tone and style for different audiences. 

Grade 6 students prepare for junior high by working on ratios, percentages, algebraic expressions, data analysis, and applying mathematical reasoning in real-world scenarios. In Science, students conduct in-depth analyses of cells, body systems, the solar system, and ecological threats, applying investigative skills and scientific reasoning in more complex experiments and discussions.

Grade 6 prepares students for junior high by focusing on ratios, percentages, algebraic expressions, and more complex operations with fractions and decimals. Students explore probability, integers, and coordinate geometry. Real-world problem-solving, abstract reasoning, and data analysis skills are developed to build readiness for advanced mathematical learning.

Grade 6 brings students to the modern era, covering events such as the Burma Road Riot, Majority Rule, and “The Contract.” Emphasis is placed on understanding the structure of the Bahamian government, global organizations like the UN, and world leadership. Geography lessons focus on world continents and unique island settlements, while economics explores banking, entrepreneurship, and the global economy. Students are encouraged to apply critical thinking to contemporary social and environmental issues.
